El grup de recerca en Diabetis i Malalties Metabòliques Associades (DIAMET) és un grup de recerca multidisciplinari i dinàmic centrat en l’estudi dels trastorns metabòlics associats a la morbiditat de la diabetis mellitus i l’obesitat. El grup de recerca està liderat per la doctora Sonia Fernandez-Veledo i el doctor Joan Vendrell i està integrat per investigadors clínics i bàsics, tècnics i personal de suport administratiu.

El grup pertany a l’Institut d’Investigació Pere Virgili (IISPV) i a l’Hospital Universitari de Tarragona Joan XXIII (HJ23) i està integrat en una xarxa nacional d’estudi de la diabetis CIBERdem, iniciada el 2008 per l’Institut de Salut Carlos III. Així mateix, el grup és reconegut des del 2009 com a grup consolidat per l’Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR) de la Generalitat de Catalunya – Universitat Rovira i Virgili.

DIAMET compta amb una àmplia experiència en la formació d’estudiants de grau, estudiants de postgrau i formació post doctoral, tant en ciències clíniques com bàsiques. El grup integra investigadors de diferents programes de prestigi competitius com ara Miguel Servet i Ramón i Cajal, ajuts post doctorals juniors (Sara Borrell i Juan de la Cierva) i contractes de formació especialitzada en salut de Río Hortega. A més, el grup ha establert programes de formació de beques en laboratoris estrangers de prestigiosos grups de recerca a Europa i EUA.
