Diabetes and Metabolic Associated Diseases (DIAMET)

METABOLIC AND NUTRITION DISEASES
TARGETS

The Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases Research Group (DIAMET) is a multidisciplinary and dynamic research group focused on the study of metabolic disorders associated with diabetes mellitus morbidity and obesity. The research group is led by Dr. Sonia Fernandez-Veledo and Dr. Joan Vendrell and is comprised of clinical and basic researchers, technicians and administrative support staff.

The group belongs to the Pere Virgili Research Institute (IISPV) and the Joan XXIII University Hospital of Tarragona (HJ23) and is part of a national diabetes study network CIBERdem, started in 2008 by the Institut de Hello Carlos III. The group has also been recognized since 2009 as a group consolidated by the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) of the Generalitat de Catalunya – Universitat Rovira i Virgili.

DIAMET has extensive experience in the training of undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral students in both clinical and basic sciences. The group integrates researchers from different prestigious competitive programs such as Miguel Servet and Ramón i Cajal, junior postdoctoral grants (Sara Borrell and Juan de la Cierva) and specialized training contracts in Río Hortega health. In addition, the group has established scholarship training programs in foreign laboratories of prestigious research groups in Europe and the USA.
