MÉS INFORMACIÓ
The Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) is an institution that integrates research in the field of biomedicine in the Camp de Tarragona and the Terres de l’Ebre regions. The IISPV is the instrument through which the university hospitals of both health regions (Joan XXIII University Hospital of Tarragona, Verge de la Cinta Hospital of Tortosa, Sant Joan University Hospital of Reus, Institut Pere Mata University Hospital of Reus) and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili have come together to bring together and manage biomedical research and innovation in the territory.
Description
There is a clear unmet clinical and technological need in the field of neonatal neurophysiology, particularly regarding amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) monitoring and the accurate localization of scalp positions for neurophysiological and neuromodulatory procedures. This project addresses these gaps by generating new knowledge on neonatal brain monitoring, electrode design, and scalp-based localization methods. The proposal integrates device engineering, signal processing, computational neuroscience, and clinical neurophysiology to produce advances with high translational impact. The team builds on a strong trajectory including two granted international patents—aCUP-E (EP4138666B1) and EPlacement (EP4337085B1)—developed and clinically tested by both Principal Investigators of the project. Challenges revealed during their clinical validation revealed scientific gaps that now motivate this project’s objectives and justify its oriented nature. Our group has recently developed a method using realistic head models to improve F3 localization. This method can be used on the webpage https://www.neurally.urv.cat/en/neurallyf3-en/
General objectives
To develop and clinically validate a new software (MATLAB application) to assist clinicians to better diagnose from EEG/aEEG recordings and easy labelling recordings for research purposes; create a more sustainable and stable neonatal electrodes; and high-precision scalp localization methods in line with the “Salud” thematic priority.
Specific objectives
O1. Advanced EEG/aEEG analysis platform and brain maturation assessment
O2. Development and characterization of the aCUP-EcoStable electrode
O3. Improved cranial localization and 10–20 mapping using EPlacement and realistic head models
O4. Extension of the EPlacement-based cranial localization framework to rTMS coil positioning and neuromodulation
O5. Translation, implementation and impact assessment
