A study led by the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) with the participation of Dr. Simona Iftimie, doctor of the Infection Control team at Hospital Sant Joan de Reus, and Dr. Graciano García Pardo, doctor of the Infection Control Group of the Hospital Joan XXIII of Tarragona (both researchers of the Research Group of the Infection and Immunity Research Group of the IISPV) has made it possible to find a therapeutic tool with antibiotics to treat the bacteremia due to Staphylococcus aureus.
Researching the cure for this infection is key: it can lead to very serious complications in different organs of our body. The study found that the combination of the antibiotics cloxacillin and fosfomycin is just as effective as the current treatment (administering cloxacillin alone) and offers a new tool for treating infections more complex This finding represents a very innovative therapeutic offer: fosfomycin is an antibiotic very little used until now and, moreover, it is being developed by a pharmaceutical company in our country.
