The Radiotherapy Oncology Research Group of the Institute of Health Research Pere Virgili (IISPV) started in 2010 and it is constituted by a multidisciplinary team that is oncologists, physicists, nutritionists, engineers, nurses … with a care activity which is mainly devoted to patients with cancer. They belong to the Radiation Oncology Department of the Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus (HUSJR) which is the Reference Health Center for cancer radiation treatment of patients diagnosed in the province of Tarragona, Spain, with a catchment area of a population of 813000 inhabitants. In 2020, 2100 patients were treated in the Service. The Radiotherapy Department treats patients from different hospitals in the province of Tarragona. The main line of basic research is “Predictive markers of response in breast cancer”. The RGRO also develops projects together with other research groups of the IISPV (Unitat de Recerca Biomèdica (URB)) and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). The group has published 150 articles indexed in journals with an international scope, as well as in more than 450 communications to national and international congresses.

The research team possesses broad experience in the study of metabolic changes mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction in breast cancer, lung, rectal and head&neck cancers after radiotherapy. The research team also collaborates with the Intelligent Robotics and Computer Vision group of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in medical image analysis and machine learning studies.

An additional research line from the group is on the anti-inflammatory effects of radiation therapy at low doses in benign diseases.
