The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the future challenges of biomedical research carried out at the IISPV, the leading health research centre in Tarragona and Terres de l’Ebre
Tarragona, Tuesday 3 December 2024. Nearly 100 researchers in the field of biomedicine and health met yesterday at the 11th scientific seminar ‘News and New Initiatives in the four Strategic Scientific Areas of the IISPV’, organised by the Pere Virgili Institute for Health Research (IISPV). The aim of this meeting was to reflect on the future challenges posed by the research carried out at the IISPV on diseases related to metabolic disorders and nutrition, oncology, mental health and neurosciences, and the environment, infections and immunity. More information on these 4 research areas and the scientific advances that are made possible here.
Many of the IISPV researchers work in different public hospitals in the Camp de Tarragona (Joan XXIII University Hospital of Tarragona, Sant Joan University Hospital in Reus and Pere Mata University Hospital) and Terres de l’Ebre (Virgen de la Cinta Hospital in Tortosa), as well as carrying out their professional work in the field of academic teaching at the Rovira i Virgili University (URV). Meetings such as these are a unique opportunity to create synergies between all these professionals, to enrich the studies and scientific projects they lead and thus contribute to improving the health of the population.
With more than 80 research projects underway, 600 professionals on its team (including research, technical and teaching staff) and 6.3 million euros in funding, the Pere Virgili Institute for Health Research (IISPV) has consolidated its position as the leading health and biomedical research centre in southern Catalonia. It is the most important scientific research centre in the counties of Tarragona and Terres de l’Ebre and has made possible very important scientific findings that contribute to improving the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases related to mental health and neurosciences; metabolism and nutrition (such as diabetes and obesity); different types of cancers; and pathologies related to immunity, the environment and infections.
