Researchers from the Institute carried out free tests for those attending and gave talks on how nutrition and lifestyles contribute to improving our health
Sunday 13 October 2024. The Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) has actively participated in the 52nd edition of ExproReus with various initiatives aimed at promoting the health of attendees. Among the most important actions, free medical tests and informative talks on nutrition and healthy lifestyles were given.
On Saturday afternoon, the team of professionals from the IISPV, members of the DIAMET research group, which studies diabetes and obesity, carried out around seventy glycated haemoglobin controls in capillary blood. This simple but crucial test determines the average blood glucose over the last three months and is key to the early diagnosis of diabetes and pre-diabetes. On this occasion, two cases of diabetes and five cases of pre-diabetes were detected.
In addition, more than fifty people were able to find out their body composition by means of a special scale, which determines the percentage of fat and water in the body, offering very valuable information for personal health.
During the weekend, the IISPV also offered several talks on healthy habits. On Sunday morning, Dr Jordi Salas, professor at the URV and head of the IISPV-URV Research Group on Food, Nutrition, Development and Mental Health, gave a talk entitled ‘What we will eat in the future’. Also today, Sunday afternoon, Dr. Elisabet Vilella, deputy director of the IISPV and head of the Institute’s Research Group on Genetics and Environment in Psychiatry, spoke on ‘Mental health: from genetics to lifestyle’.
With these actions, the IISPV wanted to bring its biomedical research closer to the public, helping to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases such as diabetes and obesity. This work is the result of the efforts of more than 600 professionals, including researchers, technicians and trainees, who carry out their work at the Reus, Tarragona and Tortosa sites, promoting innovation in public health.
