More than 350 people attended the cocktail dinner held yesterday at the Hotel Olympus Palace 4* in Salou to raise funds for stroke research through the studies and research projects that health professionals and researchers from the Stroke Unit (Neurology Service) of the Joan XXIII University Hospital of Tarragona and the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute carry out.
On the occasion of this event, Dr. Xavier Ustrell, head of the Neurology Service, recalled: ‘We work together with the regional hospitals, where the patients are; we need the collaboration of all both for treatment and for identification and prevention, to fight against this pathology’.
In the province of Tarragona, 1,600 cases of stroke are diagnosed each year, which means that 1 in 6 people will suffer one. In this sense, Dr. Ustrell stressed: ‘It is important to avoid it a healthy life without tobacco, physical exercise and the Mediterranean diet’. Dr. Francesc Bobé, a family doctor who, during his career, worked for 6 years at the Salou Primary Care Centre; the technical architect from Reus and expert in Modernism Josep Maria Buqueras and the paddle tennis player and number 1 in Catalonia, Tonet Sans, from Tarragona, gave their testimony as stroke patients.
The event was attended by numerous local personalities such as Santiago Castellano, Deputy Delegate of the Spanish Government; Cristina Berrio, 4th Deputy Mayor of Salou City Council and Councillor for Health and Public Health; Mario Soler, 8th Deputy Mayor of Tarragona City Council and Councillor for Health; Enrique Martín, Councillor for Health of Reus City Council; Josep Pallarès, Rector Magnificent of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV); Ikram Chahine, Consul of Morocco in Tarragona, Lérida and Aragon; and the Moroccan Member of Parliament, Aicha El Gourgi. Also present were a large number of health professionals from the Stroke Unit of the Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona, as well as business people from the region and personalities from the political, cultural, social and sporting worlds of the area. Gil Cristià, representing the owners of the Hotel Olympus 4* in Salou, said that ‘I am very proud of everyone’s willingness to join in this festival of solidarity against stroke. It makes me very happy to see today the 1,600 square metres of the SUMMIT with this support, thank you very much for your commitment’.
A dinner of suns and gastronomic stars
The gastronomic side of the ‘Charity Dinner for Stroke’ has had some exceptional chefs who have collaborated selflessly for the cause: Pep Moreno (Michelin Star and Sol Repsol), Ferran Cerro (Sol Repsol and recommended by the Michelin Guide), Moha Quach (Sol Repsol and recommended by the Michelin Guide), Sergi Palacín (recommended by the Michelin Guide and the Repsol Guide), Adan Sáez (winner of the best artisan panettone in 2020) and Jose Ángel Bueno, chef of the Hotel Olympus Palace 4* in Salou. All of them have amazed the attendees of the event with their culinary creations.
The cocktail-dinner was also enlivened by the music of the artist William Miller and the humour of Miki Dkai. Also present were the URV students participating in the ‘Olympus Scholarship’ and the winner of the ‘Charity Dinner for Stroke’ poster, Maira Isaura Rojas.
A raffle of the pictorial work ‘A sea of hope’, created for the exhibition ‘Tiempo Amar’ by the artist David Callau from Cambrils, and the raffle of excellent gifts courtesy of collaborating organisations brought the party to an end.
