We inaugurated a new biomedical research laboratory at the Hospital Sant Joan de Reus

The Catalan Minister of Health, Manel Balcells y Díaz, inaugurated the biomedical research laboratory of the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) in Reus on Tuesday. The IISPV is a centre of international prestige that leads the research in this field that is carried out in the Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l’Ebre. Located on floor -1 of the Sant Joan de Reus University Hospital, this laboratory occupies a surface area of 832.21 m2, with 4 functional areas: the computer work area (146.23 m2); the Cell Culture area (97.83 m²); the Biobank area (111.27 m²) and the general laboratory (214.58 m²).

The execution of the project will allow the Biomedical Research laboratory and the Biobank, located until now in the facilities of the old hospital on Carrer de Sant Joan, to be moved, as well as offering new spaces to IISPV researchers who have a funded project and need such facilities. The aim of this new laboratory is to attract young scientific talent to facilities that are adapted and updated to boost the innovation capacity of Catalunya Sud.

In the words of Lluís Gallart, head of the biomedical research laboratories of the IISPV: ‘These new facilities should allow us to bring our services and biomedical research closer to the daily activity of the hospital, favouring the creation of synergies with clinical groups and facilitating the incorporation of new research groups that develop their research in these new spaces. The aim is to strengthen biomedical research in our territory and to respond to the hopes that society places in research centres such as ours’.
