The Southern Catalonia Clinical Research Unit (UiC_IISPV-Cat_Sur) aims to improve access to clinical research in Tarragona, a region with a population of 900,000 inhabitants, by creating a new clinical research unit at the Sant Joan University Hospital in Reus (HUSJR), which will use advanced technology, telemedicine systems and a multidisciplinary team.
The strategic objectives of the UiC are the following:
> To promote equity by ensuring that all citizens, regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status, have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials.
> To manage clinical trials in various areas of health, including oncology, with special attention to the most prevalent types of cancer in certain areas of the region. In addition, it will cover cardiovascular pathologies, infectious diseases, and studies focused on nutrition and metabolism, among others.
> To create an infrastructure dedicated to conducting phase I trials in oncology, ensuring a comprehensive approach adapted to the demographic and epidemiological particularities of the region.
> To facilitate clinical research, thereby improving medical care.
> To contribute to local economic development by creating jobs, attracting and retaining talent, as well as attracting investment.
> To ensure that studies are accessible, relevant and responsive to the local needs of the population through a strong network of collaborations with institutions and patient association.
In the medium and long term, this Unit is projected as a reference center in clinical research, with expansion and innovation plans that will strengthen health and scientific progress both regionally and nationally.
