Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to gain ground in our daily lives and its application is also present in research projects in the field of biomedicine. As a result of the incorporation of AI tools into these projects, the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) has organised a training day aimed at professionals who carry out health research and which had a double objective. On the one hand, to review the existing regulations on AI, the European health data space and personal data protection and, on the other, to answer the questions of research staff on how they should ensure the treatment of patient data and participants in research projects.
More than a hundred people have taken part in this activity that has been carried out at the Sant Joan University Hospital in Reus and that has also been able to be followed virtually. This has allowed the research staff of the biomedical research institutes of Lleida and Girona to also join the session that has been given by Míriam Méndez, head of the Research area of the Office of the Health Data Protection Delegate, Fundación TIC Salud Social. This activity has been carried out within the framework of the collaborative project Beyond GO HERO, between the biomedical research institutes of Girona, Lleida and Tarragona (IDIBGI, IRB Lleida and IISPV).
The session has been divided into two parts. The first part was to present the content and the second part included practical examples in which the participants were able to express their doubts. During the training it has been highlighted that the artificial intelligence tools used in biomedical research processes are tools to support clinical decisions and must be controlled by the responsible institutions. Likewise, the need to respect the rights of data owners in all research projects has been stressed.
