The fourth edition of the Compromís Social Immaculada Sastre Miró Awards has awarded the thesis of Judith Queral Añó, postdoctoral researcher of the NFOC-Salut group (https://www.nfocsalut.com/). This recognition is awarded by the URV’s Office of Equality and Social Commitment and is divided into three categories: the best final degree project, the best master’s thesis and the best doctoral thesis category. In this new edition of the awards, a total of 16 applications were submitted, nine in the final degree category, two in the final master’s degree category and five in the doctoral thesis category. The awards aim to highlight the work that has dealt with a need defined jointly with a non-profit organization or social entity and that proposes social improvements.
Judith Queral’s doctoral thesis, entitled “Participatory research as a new approach to making decisions and increasing active engagement in health interventions for effectively improving healthy lifestyle behaviours”, is included in the framework of the European project Science Engagement to Empower Disadvantaged Adolescents (SEEDS, https://seedsmakeathons.com/), coordinated by the IISPV and where entities such as Caritas, the Departments of Education and Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Diputació de Tarragona have collaborated. The thesis is based on the fact that healthy lifestyles are influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such as barriers and facilitators, and their identification using participatory research can represent an opportunity to adapt strategies to improve healthy lifestyles. Based on 4 publications, the aim of the thesis was to demonstrate participatory research as a potential and innovative approach to making decisions based on the intrinsic and extrinsic factors of the target population and increase participation in interventions focused on improving healthy lifestyles.
Salvador Grané, director of Caritas, and Francesc Xavier Rius, member of this entity, attended the award ceremony, where Rosa M. Solà, head of the NFOC-Salut group, internist doctor at the Sant Joan University Hospital in Reus and teacher at the URV, Elisabet Llauradó and Anna Pedret, members of the NFOC-Salut group and teachers at the URV were also present.
