The second edition of the solidarity Mamapop in Tarragona has achieved a total of 30,876€ that will be used entirely for breast cancer research at the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute
The solidarity concert “Mamapop Generación Movida” held in Tarragona on November 16, 2024 has reached a total profit of ‘ 30,876, which will be entirely allocated to breast cancer research led by the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV). The final amount is the result of the benefits of the concert held at the Palau Firal i de Congressos (25.007€) and the donations from Rotary Tarragona, the CBT and the City Council of La Pobla de Mafumet. Club Rotary Tarragona has contributed ‘ 4,000 with the sale of the game ‘Les Cartes’, the CBT 660€ from the collection of the game with Palmer Basket Mallorca and the City Council of La Pobla de Mafumet 1,209€ achieved in a solidarity breakfast during the 23rd Oil Fair in the municipality.
The more than thirty thousand euros that Mamapop has delivered to the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute represent an increase of 30% with respect to the donation resulting from the first Mamapop Tarragona in 2023 (23,699€). Thanks to this donation, this year a predoctoral contract has been launched at the IISPV through which the researcher Noelia Peláez Poblet is carrying out research on new connections between obesity and breast cancer; one of the cancers that is most strongly associated with obesity, especially in postmenopausal women.
In total, Mamapop’s contribution to the IISPV in these two years amounts to 54,575€. In this sense, Manel Simon, promoter and artistic director of Mamapop, has highlighted the desire to continue weaving alliances and working in the regions of Tarragona to contribute to research. “Thanks to the involvement of the public, companies and entities with Mamapop, a predoctoral scholarship has already been launched and one of our priorities is to help keep this research active,” he added.
Dr. Joan Vendrell, director of the IISPV, stressed the need to value research as a fundamental way to improve and advance in the diagnosis and treatment of some diseases. In this sense, he explained that “in its 20 years of existence, our research institute has consolidated its activity in four research areas, one of them oncology, in which thanks to Mamapop we have promoted research in the field of breast cancer. This shows us that initiatives like this, which involve companies, institutions and the public, are very important because they allow the whole of society and research staff to join forces to fight against diseases that have a great impact on our society”.
The act of delivery of the solidarity check took place in the City of Tarragona with the participation of the mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales. “It is a pride to be with you in this shared fight to beat breast cancer, a horrific disease that takes too many people,” said the mayor addressing all the staff that make up Mamapop. Viñuales stressed that it is a project “that perfectly combines solidarity, spectacle, emotion and research”. “The first edition was a success, and this second edition has been overcome. We are very happy with the response of the people of Tarragona, it has been shown once again that we are a solidarity city”, he stressed.
The Mamapop Tarragona has once again had the support of the Repsol Foundation, the Port of Tarragona and Factor Energia; list to which the “Diputació de Tarragona” has joined in this edition. Likewise, the initiative has had the collaboration of the Tarragona City Council.
