The Human Nutrition Unit was created in 1991, and was recognised as part of the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in 1992. It comprises investigators from different professions (doctors, pharmacists, biologists and dieticians). Since June 2005 this Unit has been linked to the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
Over the last 6 years, its researchers have become part of differents research Lines recognised by the Instituto Carlos III (Network: Mediterranean Diet and Cardiovascular disease and RETIC: food and y Chronic Illnesses, PREDIMED network).
The group is currently part of CIBER: Nutrition and Obesity, also financed by the Instituto Carlos III. In addition, the group has been part of the Catalan Centre for Nutrition CCNIEC since 1994, a centre that is home to all nutrition research groups recognized in Catalunya and the Balearic Islands, under the umbrella organisation the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.

The Nutrition Unit offices and the metabolism laboratory can be found on the Second Floor of Building 0 of the Facultat de Medicina in Reus. The laboratory is equipped for the study of energy metabolism and body composition methods. The experimentation laboratory is located on the Ground Floor of Buiding 3 and provides equipment for biochemical and genetic analysis. The Unit also has an office of the First Floor of the Hospital de Sant Joan.
